Summer 2010

Latin Dance Workout








This program is an easy way to burn calories while you are learning the basic Latin dance steps. The class starts with a 5 min warm up and it is followed for salsa, merengue, cumbia, samba, bachata and other Latin rhythms.

These classes are designed to accommodate all levels of fitness. This is a family class, adults and children older than 8 years are welcome.

Classes Schedule:

- From June 22nd until July 8th:

Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 until 8:30 p.m in the Multipurpose Room of Casman Arena in Thickwood.

The fee is $10 per session or 4 sessions for $30.

- Tuesdays at the YMCA Thickwood from 9:15 a.m to 10:15 a.m .Free for YMCA members/$15 drop in if you are not a YMCA member.

Beginner Salsa Dancing :


If you want to take your first steps into the world of Salsa dance in a relaxed, friendly enviroment, this is the class for you!
Learn how to dance salsa step by step, one move at a time. You will star with the basics, then work your way up to combinations.
These classes are a lot of fun and a great way to meet people who are addicted to latin music and dance just like you!

Classes Schedule:

Private lessons also available.


Intermediate Salsa Dancing :

During these classes you can expand your salsa dance style and enjoy dancing this wonderful rhythm. You will learn different patterns and combinations that are easy to learn, but are very impressive on the dance floor.
Some of the dance patterns that you will learn are: Kentucky, Candado, Setenta, Paseala, Balsero among others.

Salsa for babies and moms:



This program will be a unique bonding experience and is also an excellent opportunity to get back in shape. These classes will help you achieving personal fitness, introduce your child to music and movement, as well expand your circle of friends! Moms will also learn the basic dance steps of salsa, merengue, cumbia and bachata. Babies must be 2 months or older.

The next sessions will start in fall.



Venezuelan folkloric dances:

The Joropo is a musical style resembling the waltz, and an accompanying dance, having African and European influences. It is a fundamental genre belonging to Venezuelan and, to a lesser extent, Colombian folklore,especificallyy of its typical music or musica criolla
The Joropo is played with the arpa llanera (harp), bandola, cuatro, and maracas . It was originally played, most often also sung, by the llaneros, the inhabitants of the Venezuelan and Colombian Llanos (plains), and thus also called musica llanera.


Calypso is a style of Afro-Caribbean music which originated in the British and French colonial islands of the Caribbean at about the start of the 20th century.
The roots of the genre lay in the arrival of African slaves who, not being allowed to speak with each other, communicated through song.
Nowadays, calypso is used to enliven the carnival celebrations in Barbados, Grenada, Panama, Venezuela, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Virgin Islands and Trinidad.




Tambor descent from the African slaves, and it is related with Saint John and Saint Peter festivities. Currently tambor is a popular rhythm normally heard and dance during celebrations such as: Weddings, Public performances, birth parties.
